There is an old Zen expression, “Things break.” I’ve tried to internalize that over the years, forcing myself not to value things so highly that their loss makes me inconsolable. Most of the time it works, but sometimes it doesn’t.
In the interim I’ve become fully Mac’ed, so all my computer equipment is Apple made. And therein lies the rub, because Apple stops supporting various products every once in a while. This month it’s Mobile Me’s turn. I have to confess that when it comes to photographs or movies that I put up on MobileMe, I’ve got duplicates of all of them on my Mac. But I also published a website there on iWeb, whose days are looking similarly numbered, and I liked what I did. I think I got 3 or 4 views, but I liked seeing it. I just assumed that the people I told about it just weren’t interested in learning more about me, since they knew me personally. And why, frankly, should anyone else want to spend the time learning about me. Nevertheless, I created the pages and enjoyed what I made.
Now, however, iWeb is not going to have a home on MobileMe any more, so everyone is saying you’ve got to move it to a host. I looked into it and got suitably confused. And today, as I easily moved my two blogs from Blogger over here to wordpress, I gave up on the idea of saving my website on MobileMe. What the hell…why not start over on a good host. Try to feel like Thomas Carlyle, whose only version of his “History of the French Revolution” was mistaken for trash by his friend John Stuart Mill‘s maid and burned. Just start over again.
Oh, well, back to the drawing board.
